By Vernon Jordan, III
In the year 1956, Reds (27) is a jazz a musician trying to make a living in Philadelphia. But when his eldest brother is found dead, he travels back down South to his birthplace of Quitman, Georgia, and bumps into his immediate and estranged older brother, Dennis (32). The widow of the deceased brother, Ada (33), is stuck between the worlds of these two men and what she wants for herself, her home and business, and her daughter, Gloria (13). Based on the events in the real life of the writer’s Grandfather’s life, this jazz, magical realist, period drama is about how two brothers will carry on in their brother’s absence, what the family will do with the home left to them, and the family’s (musical) legacy. Where do they go from here? And how do they reckon with the ghosts of a home once lived in, a home in transition, the power of memory, and the power of now?
