OttO The Generative Critter
By Grant Bouvier
OttO The Generative Critter is both a generative music hardware device and a musical composition all in one. Inspired by consumer products like the Tamagotchi and compositions like Tristan Perich’s 1-Bit Symphony, OttO seeks to create an evolving, generative work of music in real time using inexpensive and accessible electronic parts and lo-fi design aesthetics. Based around the Arduino development platform, OttO is also open source, allowing users the ability to easily write their own generative compositions to load onto the hardware. Ultimately, the objective of OttO is to break down some of the traditional technical and economic barriers associated with generative music (expensive software, hefty computer peripherals, etc.) in a playful and all encompassing package.
