Dystopian Symphony: Metropolis

ABSTRACT

Dystopian Symphony is a two-and-a-half-hour hybrid electroacoustic score written to Fritz Lang’s 1927 film Metropolis, that is meant to be performed live. Instrumentation for the score is electric guitar, euphonium, bass trombone, and fixed-media. The three aforementioned acoustic instruments are affected/processed in real-time during the performance and then blended to the fixed-media. The fixed-media consists only of electronic synthesisers created from recorded samples of marimba, vibraphone, crotales, voice, euphonium, trombone and piano. This blend of instruments and sounds creates a strangely organic feeling electronic atmosphere meant to enhance the experience of watching Metropolis.
